Peri-menopause usually begins around the age of 45 but can start as early as 40 years of age. Surgical or early menopause will be discussed in another post.

Some women experience the symptoms of peri-menopause for only a couple of months while some may continue in the peri-menopause phase for up to 10 years!

Many women have stated that they found the peri-menopause stage more severe than the actual menopause. Every woman is different. The aim is for you to be fully aware of what is happening in your body so you have a better understanding, and perhaps even acceptance for what lies ahead.

Symptoms that can be experienced during the peri-menopause include:

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal discomfort
  • Urinary discomfort, burning
  • Fatigue
  • Forgetfulness
  • Anxiety
  • Weight Gain
  • Irregular periods
  • Increased bleeding with monthly cycle

Just because the symptoms are common amongst menopausal women does not mean that you have to accept this as your fate. Your life is in your hands and there are many things you can do to decrease the severity of the symptoms and allow you to live a life less dictated to by your age and hormonal disruption.

In my next blog I will discuss the symptoms below and what you can do to try and limit the intensity of any symptoms you may be experiencing.
